Key Details
Scouter Year
The Scouter year runs from September to August each year – which is different than our youth memerbships (following the calendar year).
Your Scouter membership will need to be renewed by September each year, when you’ll be asked to re-sign the Code of Conduct.
Scouter Cost
We value your volunteer time, and recognize the commitment you’re making to our youth. There is no cost for you to become a Scouter!
There are additional costs that are incurred, however we at 1st Carp will re-imburse you! These include:
- Scouter uniform
- Respect in Sport training
Who can become a Scouter?
There are some common misconceptions about who can become a Scouter, such as:
- Do I need to have a youth in the program?
- Did I have to go through Scouts myself as a youth?
- What if I have no outdoor expecience?
The answer is that anyone can become a Scouter – we’re happy to help you develop your skills, and you do not need a youth in the program.
How long is the process, and how much time will I commit?
There are several steps in the process, both online and offline. The process can take from a week to a month, depeneding on how quickly they can be completed.
We appreciate whatever time you can give us – whether it’s just an hour a week to attend a section, or if you can assist with Group or other tasks.
What do I need to have ready?
During your application you’ll be asked to provide your personal details, as well as 5 references that Scouts Canada (not 1st Carp) can reach out to.
They do check references; as trustworthy as you may be, Scouts Canada takes the approval process of an adult very seriously.
Your references will need to meet several key requiements:
- No family members can be references, due to inherit bias
- Focus on co-workers, employers, supervisors, neighbours
- If you have worked at a youth-serving organization, you must provide one reference from there
- Two references must have known you for as minimum of 5 years
Full details are available on the Scouts Canada site as to whom they should include, under the Volunteer Screening Procedure.
What training will I need?
While your application is being reviewed, you’ll be asked to complete mandatory learning and development courses, to conform to our culture of safety.
These include:
- Scouting Funamentals
- Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders
Access MyScouts
MyScouts is the web application that Scouts Canada uses for it’s members, including Scouters and youth. It’s not the most intuitive tool, but it’s what we have for now!
Open the MyScouts Website
Already have an account?
This includes your account if you’ve registered a youth in Scouting.
If someone else performed the registration of your youth, you will need to create your own account, as they cannot be shared between people.
If you’re set… perfect! You’re almost ready to go, and can just log into your existing account.
Don't have an account?
If you don’t have your own account yet, you’ll need to create one.
Go through the steps, using your personal information, and setting a secure password for your account.
Queues
Scouts Canada has acknowleged that their technology is dated, and to prevent timeouts they have implemented a queue system.
During high periods of usage, you may be placed into a queue – you have the option of providing your email address to be notified when it’s your turn, instead of waiting!
